Cogden Beach is a wonderful option if you're searching for a dog-friendly beach on the Jurassic Coast. It boasts beautiful views of the coastline, and its tranquil ambience is perfect for a day out with your four-legged friend or loved ones. The countryside that flanks the beach is home to a variety of wildlife, including nesting birds. Cogden is popular with anglers who spend days here hoping to catch an array of fish.
Hardy’s Cottage
Whether you’re a fan of Thomas Hardy’s writing or just looking for a peaceful day out in nature, we highly recommend a visit to the thatched cottage where he grew up and became a world-renowned writer. The simple yet charming architecture of the cottage provides a glimpse into the past of this famous author and is a fascinating place to explore.
After visiting the cottage, consider walking through Thorncombe Woods, the beautiful woodland and heath landscape that greatly influenced Hardy's work. You'll feel as if you're stepping into the pages of one of his books as you wander through the peaceful surroundings.
White Mill
If you're looking for a unique and educational experience, you should definitely check out White Mill. This historic corn mill boasts original 18th-century wooden machinery and is situated in a tranquil riverside location. You can join a guided tour to learn more about the mill's owners and how the machinery works. The tours are available throughout the day on days when the mill is open and last about 40-45 minutes.
Aside from the fascinating history and machinery, the River Stour is also home to many interesting animals, birds, and fish. Keep your eyes peeled for pike, otters, and kingfishers. The surrounding area is also great for a relaxing walk, taking in the calming ambience of the countryside.
Brownsea Island
Brownsea Island is a true gem with an abundance of activities to enjoy. The best way to get there is by taking a relaxing ferry trip, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way. Once you arrive, don't miss the chance to explore their wildlife haven, which is particularly famous for its red squirrels. The island also has beautiful habitats, including a lagoon, woodland and heathland.
Brownsea Island also offers a natural play area, and free trails to discover. If you want to make the most out of your day trip to Brownsea Island, we highly recommend taking one of their guided tours, which are available every day.
Corfe Castle
Corfe Castle is an ancient royal castle that was shaped by warfare over a thousand years ago. It was originally established by William the Conqueror, but unfortunately, it was partially destroyed during the English Civil War. Despite the damage, the castle still stands as a stunning ruin that is definitely worth checking out.
There is also an Old Mill picnic area that has plenty of picnic tables next to the Corfe River. It's the perfect spot for a relaxing afternoon with friends or family. And if you're looking for some unique souvenirs to take home, be sure to stop by the village shop, which has a great selection of toys, books, gifts, and more.
Golden Cap
If you're up for a scenic walk, we highly recommend taking the hike to Golden Cap, the highest point on the South West coast. The stunning coastline overlooks the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The circular walk around Langdon Hill itself only takes about 30 minutes and is well signposted for the Langdon Hill car park. It’s a great way to get some fresh air and exercise while taking in some breath-taking views!
Ringstead Beach
Ringstead Beach is a wonderful place to spend a peaceful day by the seaside and enjoy the beauty of the West Dorset Coast. With its protected shingle beach, sandy areas, and clear waters, it offers a fun day out for families. You can take a leisurely walk across the cliff tops above Ringstead or even pack a picnic and follow one of the steep ancient tracks down to the beach. Once you arrive, you'll be amazed by the crystal-clear water and serene atmosphere.
