Dorset has a rich geological history that spans over millions of years. It is home to some of the world's best-preserved fossils, which makes it an excellent destination for fossil hunting holidays. Recently, the discovery of a 2-metre-long Pliosaur skull in Dorset has only added to the excitement around this activity. If you're interested in trying your hand at fossil hunting in this stunning location, we've rounded up the top spots for you to explore.

Charmouth Beach

Charmouth Beach is one of the most popular places to go fossil hunting in Dorset. It has a long history of fossil discoveries, with an impressive collection of ammonites, belemnites, and crinoids found of the years. The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre is great for starting your fossil-hunting adventure. The centre provides guided tours and fossil hunting walks, where you can learn about the different types of fossils and how to find them.

Ringstead Bay

Ringstead Bay is a hidden gem for fossil hunters and beach lovers alike. Located in the heart of the Jurassic Coast, this stunning beach offers breathtaking views of the sea and the nearby cliffs. But what really sets Ringstead Bay apart is the abundance of fossils that can be found here.

If you're interested in fossils, you'll be amazed at the variety of ancient treasures you can discover on this beach. Lyme Regis’ is an ideal spot for fossil enthusiasts, with plenty of prehistoric creatures that can be found in the rocks and cliffs along the beach, making it a perfect site for a fossil-hunting adventure. To get a deeper understanding of the history of the area, the Lyme Regis Museum is an excellent place to visit. Here, you can learn about the diverse range of fossils that can be found in the region and the significance of each one.

We also recommend you visit the Ammonite Pavement. The Ammonite Pavement is a geological wonder and is a must-visit for anyone interested in fossils.

Kimmeridge Bay

If you have a fascination for marine reptile fossils, I would highly recommend exploring the areas on either side of Kimmeridge Bay for fossil hunting. These spots are well-known for their ammonites, crinoids, and belemnites, which you can discover while enjoying the picturesque coastal scenery. However, please note that it is strictly prohibited to use hammers for fossil hunting in Kimmeridge Bay, but it is allowed on either side of the Bay. While you're in the area, don't miss out on visiting the Etches Collection where you can view the recently discovered 2-meter-long Pilosaur skull. This remarkable discovery has been featured in a recent documentary presented by David Attenborough and is considered one of the most significant discoveries of modern times.

Lulworth Cove

'Excellent site with clean facilities, friendly staff!'

'Friendly staff, the staff in the shop was incredibly welcoming! Loved how we were escorted to our pitch and also offered help with putting the caravan on the pitch. Swimming pool was small but ideal, good sauna! Outdoor pool was lovely also! Facilities were spotless considering we had awful weather they work extremely hard! Very clean site, great value for money!'

"Definitely will be back"

Good location with Charmouth beach and lyme regis near. Nice facilities on site and nice rooms. The tow bar restaurant is a gem with great food. Liked the activities on our stay like bingo. Overall a good stay and would love to come back again.

"Everything we needed"

Very tidy site, well laid out and well equipped. Towbar restaurant offered a good selection of quality food at all meal times, very good value for money and super friendly service. There is a small shop on site for all your essentials with access to another slightly larger shop in the village. Two pools and children’s play areas plus a gaming room were a real bonus. Shower and toilet blocks were cleaned regularly and always kept in good order. Location is fantastic, especially for avid fossil hunters with Charmouth beach around 20 minutes easy walk away through the village.

"What a wonderful place"

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday at Newlands. We stayed in the studio apartment block down the end (A17). The apartment was incredibly clean, spacious and had everything we needed for a short stay. My twin sons (3.5 years old) had the twin room, mum had the double bed, and I stayed on a blow up mattress that I brought with. We were very comfy.
