5 West Dorset Walks Near Charmouth

01 February 2022

We're truly spoilt when it comes to coast and country walks in West Dorset. Our holiday park in Charmouth makes an ideal base to start your exploration of the stunning Jurassic Coast on foot.

With a good choice of coastal walks and inland routes there is enough variety to suit all individual preferences and abilities. Shorter walks provide a taster of the local scenery, and some of the longer walks take in more or the local landmarks.

It can be difficult to know where to begin with so many options for great walks near Charmouth. To help simplify matters, here are a few of the best walks we can recommend close to Newlands...

Charmouth To Lyme Regis Walk

The direct path along the South West coast path from Charmouth to Lyme Regis is around 2.5 miles in length. However, as a result of significant damage to parts of the cliff in this area in recent years, diversions have been put in place. This means that the majority of the walk heads inland and follows some stretches of the road. Along this route is the Lyme Regis Golf Club, and the nearby Jurassic Footgolf. The pay-off for the 1 hour walk is the arrival in Lyme Regis where you can relax on the beach or reward yourself with a pub lunch.

Charmouth To Wootton Fitzpaine Walk

The pleasant footpath walk from Charmouth to Wootton Fitzpaine follows a stream linked to the River Char. The pathway starts in the centre of Charmouth village next to the Post Office and passes pretty meadows on its scenic river route. The duration of the walk is around 35 minutes and covers just over a mile and half before reaching Wootton. A nice easy walk and one of the prettiest countryside walks around Charmouth.

Charmouth Circular Walk

A moderate length walk is the 2 mile circular walk of Charmouth which starts at the beach car park. From here, heading east towards Stonebarrow Hill, the route takes you back along Stonebarrow Lane and back to Charmouth Beach. Stroll through pretty farmland fields surrounded by agricultral fencing. A delightful walk to explore the area near Newlands with the added bonus of coastal views.

Golden Cap Estate

If you've got a few hours to dedicate to walking near Charmouth we highly recommend The Golden Cap Estate. Here you can enjoy miles of spectacular countryside and trails along the coast path in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Golden Cap itself is the highest point on the Jurassic Coast and is situated between Bridport and Charmouth and roughly 3.5 miles from Newlands.

Circular Walk Around Lyme Regis

We love Lyme Regis here at Newlands so we'd gladly take any excuse to visit the 'Pearl of Dorset'. As well as the walk from Charmouth the Lyme Regis, why not explore Lyme even further with a circular walk starting from the pretty coastal town. The 5 mile circular walk starts at the Clocktower at the Cobb Gate car park and continues through Timber Hill Woods and then crosses the golf course. This heads back to Charmouth where the walk takes you along the beach back to Lyme Regis. Checking tide times is a must for this route as it will not be possible during high tide.

We hope you enjoy these walks and exploring the stunning near Charmouth, if you have any questions our friendly and knowledge team will be more than happy to help!
