Great local food is one of the biggest attractions for visitors to the
Dorset Jurassic Coast, and June is packed with fantastic food events to get the taste buds going.
Bridport Food Festival
Always a highlight of the Dorset foodie calendar, the
Bridport Food Festival takes place this week. It's a whole 7 days of delicious, colourful and exciting food events for people of all ages to enjoy from 12th-18th June. Here are some of the events to look out for:
Tuesday: Free food-themed quiz and sausage tasting event
Wednesday: Cheese, cider and speciality bread taste-off, and a Mediterranean cooking demonstration
Thursday: Under-8s biscuit decorating competition
Friday: Beer festival, plus a food and drink Q&A with a panel featuring celebrity
Lyme Regis chef Mark Hix
Sunday: The Big Bridport Picnic
The special guest star of the festival will be none other than Channel 4's Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, who will be dropping in to the
West Dorset town to share some of the culinary wisdom from his adventures at River Cottage.
Dorset Nettle Eating Contest
Meanwhile, those of you with a more daring, unconventional palate may be interested in attending the World Nettle Eating Championships in Marshwood this month.
The name says it all really, this is an annual Dorset event in which competitors try to eat as many stinging nettles as possible in one hour! The competitor with the most bare stalks stripped of their leaves at the end of the allotted time is crowned world champion.
The competition has been running since 1986, and in previous years has attracted nettle eaters from as far away as New York and Australia.
Newcomers are welcome to join in with the fun, but we wouldn't blame you if you choose just to watch rather than get involved with this one!
