About the Centre

In the summer (1st April - 3rd November) the Centre is open seven days a week from 10:30am to 4:30pm. During the winter months (4th November - 31st March) opening is restricted to Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. History of the Centre

The origins of Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre date back to 1985 when it was originally founded. Since then, the organisation has continued to attract interest, now with three wardens and a growing team of volunteers in support. As a charitable trust, the centre are largely reliant on this help to undertake a number of roles. The Fine Foundation and the Heritage Lottery Fund have supported the development, as have kind donations visitors. A staggering 100,000 visitors are welcomed through the centre's doors each year.

Attenborough's Sea Dragon

The star of the BBC documentary ‘Attenborough and the Sea Dragon’ known as the ichthyosaur is on display at the Centre. On loan to the Centre for a year, this is a rare chance to see this unique fossil up close.

Guided Fossil hunting walks

Throughout the year the centre run guided fossil hunting and rockpooling walks along the local coastline. The Centre's education programme includes activities for primary and secondary school groups. Visit the official website for full details.

Bus services run to Charmouth from Axminster to Dorchester (X51) and Axminster to Weymouth (X53). The nearest town with a train station is Axminster.

'Excellent site with clean facilities, friendly staff!'

'Friendly staff, the staff in the shop was incredibly welcoming! Loved how we were escorted to our pitch and also offered help with putting the caravan on the pitch. Swimming pool was small but ideal, good sauna! Outdoor pool was lovely also! Facilities were spotless considering we had awful weather they work extremely hard! Very clean site, great value for money!'

"Definitely will be back"

Good location with Charmouth beach and lyme regis near. Nice facilities on site and nice rooms. The tow bar restaurant is a gem with great food. Liked the activities on our stay like bingo. Overall a good stay and would love to come back again.

"Everything we needed"

Very tidy site, well laid out and well equipped. Towbar restaurant offered a good selection of quality food at all meal times, very good value for money and super friendly service. There is a small shop on site for all your essentials with access to another slightly larger shop in the village. Two pools and children’s play areas plus a gaming room were a real bonus. Shower and toilet blocks were cleaned regularly and always kept in good order. Location is fantastic, especially for avid fossil hunters with Charmouth beach around 20 minutes easy walk away through the village.

"What a wonderful place"

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday at Newlands. We stayed in the studio apartment block down the end (A17). The apartment was incredibly clean, spacious and had everything we needed for a short stay. My twin sons (3.5 years old) had the twin room, mum had the double bed, and I stayed on a blow up mattress that I brought with. We were very comfy.
