Seatown to West Bay
Leaving Seatown, the path climbs the steep ridge of Thorncombe Beacon, one of the highest points on the Dorset coastline. This ascent is rewarded with sweeping views of the Jurassic Coast and inland countryside. As you descend towards Eype, the terrain becomes gentler, passing quiet fields and paths.
Continue along the path to West Bay, famous for its dramatic cliffs and charming harbor, featured prominently in the TV series Broadchurch. West Bay offers several dining options, perfect for a well-earned break before continuing your journey.
West Bay to Burton Bradstock
From West Bay, the path hugs the coastline, passing Hive Beach, a popular stop for walkers. The Hive Beach Café provides a wonderful spot to enjoy local seafood or a quick coffee, and it's dog-friendly too. The section to Burton Bradstock is relatively flat, with fantastic views of the cliffs and the sweeping curve of Chesil Beach beginning to emerge.
Burton Bradstock to Abbotsbury
As you leave Burton Bradstock, the path transitions into more open terrain with views across the Fleet Lagoon and Chesil Beach, a unique 18-mile shingle ridge stretching towards Portland. This section is quieter and more remote, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings.
Approaching Abbotsbury, you’ll pass fields and gentle rolling hills before reaching the historic village. Abbotsbury is famed for its Swannery and Subtropical Gardens, as well as its picturesque stone cottages and quaint tea rooms.
Practical Tips
- Distance: Approximately 13 miles (21 km). Allow 6-7 hours to complete at a steady pace, including breaks.
- Terrain: A mix of steep ascents, rolling countryside, and flatter coastal paths. Be prepared for challenging climbs, especially at Thorncombe Beacon.
- Navigation: Waymarked paths are generally easy to follow, but a map or GPS is advisable.
- Refreshments: Stops are available at West Bay and Burton Bradstock, with limited options between these and Abbotsbury.
