Scenic Coastal Walking Trails in West Dorset

West Dorset is a picturesque region with plenty of walking routes and an excellent opportunity to connect with nature. From the South West Coast Path to Church Cliff Walk, hikes cater to all preferences and fitness levels. Below are some of the most notable coastal walking trails in West Dorset that are worth exploring.

South West Coast Path

The South West Coast Path is one of the most renowned long-distance footpaths in the UK. Stretching over 600 miles, it is designated as a National Trail and encompasses many iconic areas in West Dorset. Most hikers choose to compelte small sections at a time, with each section offering something new to explore. Whether it's the rugged beauty of Chesil Beach, the serene Abbotsbury Fleet Lagoon, or the historic allure of Corfe Castle. The path provides an opportunity to experience the natural beauty of West Dorset.

Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door Circular

This 6km circuit takes you along the coast from Durdle Door to Lulworth Cove. Along the way, you'll see geological marvels of the Jurassic Coast, including the iconic limestone arch of Durdle Door, Stair Hole and Lulworth Cove. It's important to note that this hike is ideal for warmer and dry weather, as there are some uneven paths and steps that can be dangerous during wetter days.

The coastal walking path at Hive Beach is perfect for those who want to take a dog-friendly stroll in West Dorset. The walk takes about 35 minutes to complete and offers beautiful views of Burton Cliff, known for its alternating hard and soft layers. If you'd like, you can also explore Burton Bradstock, which is home to pretty thatched cottages. The walk starts and ends at Hive Beach Car Park. We highly recommend popping into the acclaimed Hive Beach Cafe to refuel after your walk!

Lyme Regis to Charmouth Beach

The 5-mile Lyme Regis and Charmouth Beach route is well-signposted and offers stunning views. It takes you over the back of Spittles, a sloping cliff, and during the spring and summer, you’ll pass through beautiful bluebell woodlands. The route also takes you through the Lyme Regis Golf Course before arriving at Charmouth Beach. You can take the X51 or X53 bus from Newlands Holiday Park to Lyme Regis and then walk back to our caravan site from Charmouth Beach.

Church Cliff Walk

For those seeking a quieter coastal walking experience, the Church Cliff Walk is an excellent choice. The Church Cliff Walk is a seawall that opened in 2015, providing much better access to the fossil beach at East Cliff. The path starts at the Charmouth Road car park.

This circular 4-mile walk to Golden Cap from Seatown consists of gravel paths, grass, and stairs. It's an ideal choice for individuals seeking a more challenging route. The hike takes you to the highest spot on the South Coast and passes by a ruined church and Langdon Hill.

'Excellent site with clean facilities, friendly staff!'

'Friendly staff, the staff in the shop was incredibly welcoming! Loved how we were escorted to our pitch and also offered help with putting the caravan on the pitch. Swimming pool was small but ideal, good sauna! Outdoor pool was lovely also! Facilities were spotless considering we had awful weather they work extremely hard! Very clean site, great value for money!'

"Definitely will be back"

Good location with Charmouth beach and lyme regis near. Nice facilities on site and nice rooms. The tow bar restaurant is a gem with great food. Liked the activities on our stay like bingo. Overall a good stay and would love to come back again.

"Everything we needed"

Very tidy site, well laid out and well equipped. Towbar restaurant offered a good selection of quality food at all meal times, very good value for money and super friendly service. There is a small shop on site for all your essentials with access to another slightly larger shop in the village. Two pools and children’s play areas plus a gaming room were a real bonus. Shower and toilet blocks were cleaned regularly and always kept in good order. Location is fantastic, especially for avid fossil hunters with Charmouth beach around 20 minutes easy walk away through the village.

"What a wonderful place"

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday at Newlands. We stayed in the studio apartment block down the end (A17). The apartment was incredibly clean, spacious and had everything we needed for a short stay. My twin sons (3.5 years old) had the twin room, mum had the double bed, and I stayed on a blow up mattress that I brought with. We were very comfy.
