Things to do in Beer, East Devon

The charming fishing village of Beer sits inside the East Devon border between Lyme Bay and west of Seaton. As part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, Beer's distinctive cliffs form a memorable stretch of the South West Coast Path. Spectacular views, popular coastal walks and village attractions make for a great day out in Devon. Situated 15 miles along the coast from our West Dorset Holiday Park – in just under half an hour's drive you'll arrive in Beer.

Beer Beach

Beer has a beautiful pebbly beach with a backdrop of rugged limestone cliffs. A short walk from the village and you're free to while away the hours listening to the soothing sounds of the sea washing over the shingle. Simply relax in the picturesque cove and take in the quaint view of fishing boats dotted along the shoreline. There are several nearby pubs and cafés to enjoy, plus the chance to purchase some freshly caught fish.

South West Coastal Path

There's a great choice of popular coastal and country walks from Beer. Beer to Branscombe is a 4.5 mile walk along the South West Coast Path. Highlights of this walk include spectacular views of the Jurassic Coast and award winning pubs. Beer to Quarry Caves is a shorter option at 2 miles with great attractions including Pecorama. If you're looking for a longer walk, Beer to Blackberry is a 6 hour hike covering over 12 miles and takes in a variety of countryside views across the hills and valleys that make up the stunning area of beauty.

St Michaels Church

St Michaels Church is a well kept village church with stunning stained glass windows and interior architecture. The grade II listed building is very much the heart of the town and you won't be able to miss it as you stroll around the village. The community centrepiece is well worth a look around to experience Beer's rich heritage.

Beer Quarry Caves

Beer's Quarry Caves is a popular attraction for guided tours around its ancient underground caverns. The caves are the home of Beer Stone, a chalky limestone which is used by stonemasons on some impressive landmark buildings around the world. Cathedrals at Exeter, Winchester, St Paul's and Norwich have benefitted from stone quarried from the site. Today, the caves play host a number of events and tours from March to November. A fascinating tour of the man-made caves lasts for roughly an hour, and remember to look out for bats! See the Quarry Caves website for more information and to make booking enquiries.

Pecorama and steam railway

Pecorama is one of East Devon's leading visitor attractions. Popular as a family day out, this 9 acre site is a great way to unwind in its flower-filled gardens. A dream come true for both keen gardeners and model railway enthusiasts. Pecorama is home to PECO, the manufacturer of model railway accessories. Indoor exhibitions take place throughout the year for model railway hobbyists to meet up. There's also a chance to take a ride on the Beer Heights Light Railway and enjoy panoramic views of the Jurassic Coast. A jam-packed programme of special events is on offer. These include Easter egg hunts, the Summer Spectacular and much more. There's something for everyone at Pecorama – for a truly special family day out.

'Excellent site with clean facilities, friendly staff!'

'Friendly staff, the staff in the shop was incredibly welcoming! Loved how we were escorted to our pitch and also offered help with putting the caravan on the pitch. Swimming pool was small but ideal, good sauna! Outdoor pool was lovely also! Facilities were spotless considering we had awful weather they work extremely hard! Very clean site, great value for money!'

"Definitely will be back"

Good location with Charmouth beach and lyme regis near. Nice facilities on site and nice rooms. The tow bar restaurant is a gem with great food. Liked the activities on our stay like bingo. Overall a good stay and would love to come back again.

"Everything we needed"

Very tidy site, well laid out and well equipped. Towbar restaurant offered a good selection of quality food at all meal times, very good value for money and super friendly service. There is a small shop on site for all your essentials with access to another slightly larger shop in the village. Two pools and children’s play areas plus a gaming room were a real bonus. Shower and toilet blocks were cleaned regularly and always kept in good order. Location is fantastic, especially for avid fossil hunters with Charmouth beach around 20 minutes easy walk away through the village.

"What a wonderful place"

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday at Newlands. We stayed in the studio apartment block down the end (A17). The apartment was incredibly clean, spacious and had everything we needed for a short stay. My twin sons (3.5 years old) had the twin room, mum had the double bed, and I stayed on a blow up mattress that I brought with. We were very comfy.
